The place is a highly popular tourist drive established between 1902 and 1927
primarily as a route to the natural cave systems in the area.
The place passes through the highly picturesque regrowth karri forest at Boranup,
which has become a popular visitor attraction.
Caves Road traverses the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, from Yallingup in the North to Augusta in the South. The road has retained it's original tree lined, winding character so admired by early visitors and settlers to the Leeuwin-Naturaliste region. It takes the traveller through a tunnel of trees that meet overhead.
Caves Road connects many heritage listed sites associated with early settlement of the Naturaliste-Leeuwin region. These include Caves House, Ngilgi Cave, Ellensbrook Homestead, Glengarry Homestead, Burnside, the Old Bridge House, Wallcliffe Estate, Calgardup Cave, Mammoth Cave, Lake Cave, Giants Cave, Brides Cave, Jarrahdene town and mill site, Boranup Timber Mill, Hamelin Bay, Karidale, Karridale Cemetery, Moondyne Cave and Jewel Cave
