Statement of Significance

Significance of water supplies, education, as a meeting place and venue for social activities. The place demonstrates associations with the earliest European occupations, and the Rabbit Proof Fence.

Physical Description

Evidence remains of the stoned soaks, although they are partly filled-in and dry. The sandalwood carters tracks are evident.

History

Sandalwood cutters and carters camped at the two soaks which provide ample water for men and their horses. The soaks which were later stone lined, were the recognised meeting a place; mail was left, and the annual sports and picnic days took place in the vicinity. The mail service from York was a day's journey in a horse and sulky. The Reserve was a stopping point on the weekly mail route along Cubbine Road from York to Mt Caroline. The service travelled to 17 mile gate on the #2 Fence, camped at Sewell's at Mt Caroline and returned the next day. Rabbit trappers also camped at the Reserve. In 1910 a School was constructed and established by the settlers, later the government constructed one . Mrs Janet Wilson, the Scottish wife of settler JB Wilson, opened the Mooraning School in 1909, writing her own curriculum, based on her educational qualifications. She walked 3.5 miles through the bush each way, every day for 10 years until the school was closed in 1919.
