The Cave Bar was the only area available for people to entertain friends, business partners and associates in the early days of Kununurra. Local people and visitors would have experienced many an entertaining evening, important business transaction or developing relationship. Zebra rock is a distinctive stripey rock which is mined in the area, one of the mines being sited at Mining Location 80/185 (Refer Place No 56)
The Cave Bar, which is now called the homestead Bar, is located in the Homestead Restaurant. There have been considerable additions around the original bar, ie, roof section, walls behind the bar area have been set back and given a cave like appearance.
The Zebra Rock Bar was built at the time the hotel was constructed in 1964. Local men transorted loads of zebra rock from Argyle Station. The rock was sorted, scraped, cut and polished, and was then set into a back supporting brick wall. When finished, the wall was varnished with at least six coats of clear varnish. A laminex top was fitted, but this was replaced with a wooden top in 1965.
Integrity: 100%
Modifications: In 1965 the laminex top was replaced with a wooden top by Nick Cavlovic
