Considerable Significance

DESCRIPTION: Very important to the heritage of the locality. High degree of integrity/ authenticity. DESIRED OUTCOME: Conservation of the place is highly desirable. Any alterations or extensions should reinforce the significance of the place.

Statement of Significance

The park facilities, widely used by both local people and tourists, include
a rotunda, children’s play equipment, a jetty and provisions for craft fairs
such as the Easter Fair. Pantomimes and Village Theatre performances
are also held. Across the river, the John Clark Memorial Bandstand
provides entertainment in an exceptional setting. To the north of the
Bridge, still on the town side, is Thornton Park, which also has a rotunda
and manicured lawns sweeping down to the river edge.

Physical Description

Berridge Park is part of the Denmark River Reserve which extends
down to the Wilson Inlet. The Park has a more formal appearance
with manicured lawns and well appointed facilities designed to attract
numerous visitors.

History

The park has historic, aesthetic and social heritage significance. Berridge
Park includes the parklands along the Denmark River, south of the
Denmark Traffic Bridge on the town side. It is named in honour of Percy
Berridge who lived in Denmark for many years. Mr Berridge was once
a gardener on the staff of the Queen of England and kept a beautiful
garden in the grounds of the Butter Factory.
