Category Description
Municipal Inventory Adopted 27 Oct 1998 Category 4

Category 4

Some heritage value, but not essential to an understanding of the district. Recommend that the place is not included on the Town Planning Scheme at this time. Re-assess the significance of the place when the Inventory is regularly reviewed. Assess in more detail when considering a development application. Record the place prior to redevelopment or demolition. This category is not included in the Town Planning Scheme, and therefore a planning application is not required for proposed development or demolition of the place. Should a building or demolition application be received by Shire, it should be considered on the basis of the recognised heritage value, and the owner offered the same consultation facilities as for the Town Planning Scheme. The places in this category should be reviewed regularly with consideration for inclusion in the Town Planning Scheme.

Statement of Significance

The place represents the progressive spirit of the Victoria Plains Council in 1966.

Physical Description

A brick construction with a hipped tile roof. Domestic scale construction. The light coloured bricks were complemented with a green tiled roof. Rear extensions for a filing area. In 1997, extra offices were added for the EHO and Works manager. The original timber counter was also altered in 1997.

History

The Victoria Plains Shire was one of the original road districts proclaimed in Western Australia in 1871. In 1887, the district was changed to the Melbourne Road District, but reverted to Victoria Plains again in 1890. In 1961, the Road District became the Shire. The building was officially opened on 28 October 1966, by the Minister for Local Government, Mr Logan. Cost $27000. The new building reflected the status of the Shire area. The former building (on a different site) was sold to the CWA. The Council of 9 members from 4 wards meet in the Council Chambers monthly.
