Statement of Significance

Hampton Lodge has local social significance for its associations with the Freemasons and the Northampton community. It has the potential to contribute to the streetscape if the later additions are modified or removed.

Physical Description

The original element of the Freemason's Lodge has stone walls and a CGI roof. The windows down the side are high level, brick quoined, and with flat arched heads. During the 1960's a substantial brick extension was added to the south of the original entry porch that now forms the junction between the two buildings. Modifications also included an unsympathetic attempt to 'modernise' the front stone wall of the original building with a horizontal rendered parapet painted white. The scale of the large building relates well to the Hampton Road (North West Coastal Highway) streetscape and the adjoining Holy Trinity Church (Site No. 101). Gates have been added to enclose the entry portico.

History

The Northampton Freemasons (Lodge No. 93), were officially formed in 1913. Tenders calling for the construction of a Lodge building were advertised in 1920 (Geraldton Guardian 18/11/1920 ). The hall was built on a block of land donated by Mr J. Lee and was completed in November 1921 (Geraldton Guardian 9/11/1921).
