Hendy's Cottage has historic significance given its connection to the Hendy family, Sophia Dent and the early settlement of the district.
1997
Set close to the Midland Railway line and Midlands Road, this simple four room mud brick cottage has a corrugated iron hipped roof which extends to cover surrounding verandahs. The verandahs have been enclosed with corrugated iron to the west and north sides. Windows are small timber framed two pane and the front four panel entry door is centrally placed.
2004
The place has changed little since 1997, some improvements have been effected.
Hendy’s Cottage is built of mud brick and corrugated iron and was the home of John and Catherine Hendy (nee Bradley). Hendy worked for the Burges family in the 1890s and previously lived in another cottage close to Pell Bridge, south of Pell’s Cottage (Place No. 112) and at that time he was employed by Phillips. The house was also the home of Sophia Dent, (wife of W C Ellery and then J Mitchell). She is believed to be the first European female child born at the Swan River Colony.
