History

Hendy’s Cottage is built of mud brick and corrugated iron and was the home of John and Catherine Hendy (nee Bradley). Hendy worked for the Burges family in the 1890s and previously lived in another cottage close to Pell Bridge, south of Pell’s Cottage (Place No. 112) and at that time he was employed by Phillips. The house was also the home of Sophia Dent, (wife of W C Ellery and then J Mitchell). She is believed to be the first European female child born at the Swan River Colony.
