A regular water supply has always been a critical issue for survival in the Yilgarn region owing to the arid conditions and the absence of freshwater rivers or artesian springs. The large number and variety of man made structures such as dams and wells, reflects the settlement patterns chosen over time. The locations (sites) of the structures were carefully chosen to maximise the natural water catchment areas. Even these numerous watering holes were not sufficient, and water supply had to be supplemented, using saline bore water, processed in condensers at various locations in the region.
The old well was a major watering place along the Sandalwood Track. In 1966 a large cement tank was built for the farmers.
The old well is at the base of the Dulyalbin Rock which is in a Government Reserve. The well was one of the major watering places along the Sandalwood Track. It remained active until a large cement tank was built in 1966. The tank is used to supplement local farm water supplies in dry periods though at times even this runs dry. The rocks were also the scene of Boxing Day community picnics. Dulyalbin Rock features an example of an overhanging wave-like granite rock, which rivals the famous Wave Rock at Hyden.
