Statement of Significance

The site is significant as a townsite in the Boyanup area, planned before the town of Boyanup.

History

Gwindinup townsite is in the vicinity of the siding, which is on the Boyanup Donnybrook line, the first siding south of Boyanup. The area of Gwindinup was settled before Boyanup. The Bunbury-Boyanup railway was completed in 1887, but not used until 1891. The Boyanup line was connected to the main southwest line from Perth on 22 August 1893, and as Donnybrook was emerging as the centre of a rapidly expanding orchard industry, the line was extended and opened to traffic on 16 November 1892.

Statement of Significance

The site is significant for the associations with the earliest education in the Boyanup area.

History

By 1877, the number of children in the Boyanup area justified a school. Miss Moriarty ran the first Government school (this one), and then Alice Hurst. In c1890, Mrs Jim Ecclestone ran school classes in her home at 'Runnymead', and in the students homes, after the school closed, and continued to do so until the Boyanup School was established.

Statement of Significance

The site is significant as the site of the first timber mill in the Boyanup area.

History

The Runnymead Mill was the original timber mill in the Boyanup area. It was located in the midst of a good stand of timber, and there were many workers in the area. The land was thrown open for selection on conditional purchase, and many retired mill workers selected land and settled on the blocks, establishing horticultural industries on the small holdings. Up until the 1970s, it was grazing land , although at that time it was sold for small lots, and became a dormant suburb of Boyanup.
