Values

Associations with Dempsters and Brodie-Hall

Good example of Federation Bungalow style residence

Represents historical development of Perth hills as country homes for prominent citizens.

Social value as a remnant of the early history of the area, as evidenced by the support of residents in the surrounding units for its conservation.

Physical Description

Large single-storey former residence with deep verandahs on two sides. Tile roof has three gables to the front elevation. Walls of pebble-dash rendered brick. Leadlight casement windows. Set in landscaped gardens, including sundial and pergola, probably from the 1960s. Later enlargements (1960s?) to add full-sized billiard room, music room and study. Gardens probably also developed at this time.

History

Built in 1918 as a country residence for the Dempster family, a Northwest Station family. They named it Caridr, an indigenous word thought to mean ‘waterhole’. In the 1920s the place was a gentleman’s country residence. Purchased in 1964 by Mr (now Sir) Laurence C. Brodie-Hall CMG, chairman of Western Mining in the 1980s, who entertained many notable people in his home. Internal enlargements were made in the 1960s following his purchase, and the gardens were developed into nearly 5 acres of parkland. The house is now the centre of a development of a 35 units retirement complex, and functions as community rooms for the complex. It is primarily maintained by the aging members of the community, who have appealed for help in its conservation.

Good This residence was built in 1906 for Henry Diggins Holmes (1846-1931) the manager of the Western Australian bank and had his primary residence in Cottesloe at his home 'Banksia', later Le Fanu. He and his wife, Marion and their daughters were devout Christians and very active in charity work. This residence in Gooseberry Hill was a 'country residence' for use during holidays and weekend retreats for the family. It has not been established who were the architect or builder of the residence. On the death of Henry Holmes in 1931 the property was sold and converted to a guest house. It maintained that function until after World War II. It has been a private residence for many years.

Fair to good This residence was built by orchardist Richard Urch, strawberry grower and orchardist. The building 'Boonooloo' is believed to have originally been a hotel in Fremantle called 'His Lordship's Larder' transported and moved in pieces to Betti Road. It is speculated that 'His Lordship's Larder' was an early prefabricated building known as a 'Manning' building however there may be confusion with the owner of 'His Lordship's Larder' Lucius Manning (1841-1888). The former single storey timber building, 'His Lordship's Larder' was deconstructed in 1903 therefore this building may have served as an addition to an existing structure. Richard and Mary Urch lived at the property until the 1920s when they relocated to Cottesloe Beach (now Mosman Park) and lived in a house they named 'Boonooloo'. The origin of the name is not known. The house was one of the first guest houses in Kalamunda and an advertisement in the local press in 1917 describes its assets. 'The Boonooloo Hotel is really a charming residence of 20 rooms (eight having just been added), with spacious verandahs. There are 10 acres of nicely laid out ground, five acres of which an orchard. Visitors, either week-end or for term, are assured of plenty of poultry, eggs, milk, cream and fruit. Arrangements can be made by ringing up Kalamunda 6. Conveyances meet all trains. The Hostel under the personal management of Mrs. F. Sorrell, house catering is the best advertisement. In 1928, the place was converted for use as a private girls school run by Miss Whitmarsh who had previously operated the Kalamunda High School at 120 Williams Street, Gooseberry Hill. In the period following World War II the place was subdivided into flats.

Condition

Good This property was originally owned by Isaac Bloomer Jecks, later Richard Urch and then Jack Honnor who established an orchard on the site then sold the property to Edward Moss. Moss was born in South Australia but moved to WA to pursue his interests in mining in the early 1900s. Moss built the house on the property in 1921 and whilst the house was being built he lived on the property in a shed with his housekeeper, Emilie Seidel. Sons of Jack Honnor were employed at the time to install drains on the block. Edward Moss did not live at the house for long periods preferring to engage others to live and work on the property. The Pagotto family were managers of the place during the 1930s. In 1939, the place was leased to Matron Beste, who ran it as a hospital until 1946. In 1946, the property was sold to the Eccles sisters, Patricia and Eleanor, who converted the hospital into a guest house. The Eccles sisters named the property 'Glengariff' after their father's Irish home town. In 1950, the property was sold and subdivided into flats and known as 'Tino Flats' and later, in the 1960s, the place was returned to use as a private residence by the Callard family.

Values

The place is associated with Perth’s first permanent city water supply, which was built as a private enterprise prior to the government assumption of responsibility for water supply.

The place is associated with Neil McNeil and the Jarrahdale Timber Company.

The place is the oldest of four diversion channels listed in the Heritage Council’s database and is therefore of rarity value.

Physical Description

The place appears to comprise a small dam area off Canning Road and a collecting channel with earthen, rock and concrete walls approximately 1 metre deep running from Munday’s Brook to the Victoria Reservoir (fmr). Some sections appear to have been also completed in pipe.

History

In 1889 Neil McNeil’s Jarrahdale Timber Station Company took over the timber company at Rockingham and began building the Victoria Reservoir in that year. The Government had not yet assumed responsibility for water supply, and construction of the dam was undertaken as a private enterprise. The Reservoir was to be the first catchment dam in Perth. The site chosen for the Dam was on Munday Brook, south of the old Mason and Bird timber Mill. McNeil carted imported Portland concrete with horse and dray from Perth, using Mason and Bird’s original track. Workers combined hand-mixed cement with rocks to form the wall of the dam. Construction was completed in 1891, and Edward Keane’s wife opened the dam. The opening ceremony proved unforgettable, as attendees were forced to trudge through the muddy bush because of a lack of carts from the Station to the dam. Celebrations were further marred by their occurrence during an influenza epidemic. The party attending the ceremony is thought to be the first group to travel on Edward Keane’s newly opened railway. The project included the construction of a pipeline to Kings Park that supplied Perth residents with their first reticulated water. The Kalamunda region did not itself receive reticulated water until 1954, despite its proximity to both the Mundaring Weir and Victoria Reservoir. The reservoir was purchased by the government in 1896. Problems with the flow of water to Perth in the 1890s resulted in the building of diversion channels including Munday’s Brook Diversion Channel in 1897. The work was carried out by manual labour and use of horses.

Statement of Significance

·         The place has historic value for its association with the local road board, the precursor to the Shire of Kalamunda, which had occupied this site from 1904. ·         The place has historic value as a demonstration of the faith in the future development of the community in the 1930s. ·         The place has social value as the majority of the community would have visited this place either as shire offices or as a police station ·         The place has aesthetic value as a landmark in the street and as a good representative example of inter-war stripped classical style.

Physical Description

1930s single storey building with hipped and gablet tiled roof, twin entry statements and an almost symmetrical façade. The building originally consisted of the north range incorporating a bank of two sash windows to the north of the entry statement and a bank of three to the south of the entry. The building was extended in the 1960s adding a further window to what has become the central bank of openings, an additional entry statement to match the original and a further bank of three sash windows to the south of the added entrance. The elevations are rendered brick with timber framed windows of two styles to the front elevation. The roof is hipped in form with vented gablets to the elevated ridge line and clad in terracotta tiles. New ‘Dome’ canopies have been constructed over the verandah areas to the front providing enhanced protection replacing the original individual window awnings.

Condition

Good The Darling Range Roads Board was formed in 1898 and a timber building was constructed on this site in 1904. The first portion of this brick building was constructed for the Road Board in 1934. Architect, Edwin Summerhayes designed the brick building to consist of a board room, secretary's office, general office and a strong room. The tender of builder Mr V. W. Leech of approximately £1000 was accepted. The Darling Range Road Board became the Shire of Kalamunda in 1961 and the building with additions constructed in 1964 served the Shire until the construction of their new buildings in 1978. The new additions replicated the original façade and additional buildings were constructed on the site over the period of occupancy by the Shire. On the relocation of the shire offices the building was used as offices for the Kalamunda Police Station and related police services. In 2012, the building was acquired by restaurant chain, DOME, who restored the building and refitted the interior to accommodate a commercial kitchen and café.
