In 1896, John and Elizabeth Clarke and their son Charles arrived in Elgin on the 'Firth Moray' in Scotland via Western Australian goldfields. Clarke was an agent for Hayward's in Bunbury, buying and selling produce around the district. he took up 2,000 acres of virgin bush ne called 'Billabong', later called 'Elgin'. The Elgin Siding was in that property.

Statement of Significance

The site has significant associations with a way of life associated with the cattle industry.

History

Cocker was an Aboriginal drover. In the early days, the cattle would be driven to the Naturaliste coast through Busselton, Capel and Elgin. The Gibbs, Gardiners and Flynns had coast blocks, and they would take their cattle to the coast, through what is now Rodwell's and Kitchen's properties. Cocker's Well was a stock yard, water hole and provided a place to camp overnight on the journey.

Statement of Significance

The site has associations with the settlement of the Elgin area, David Reid, and as a social venue.

Physical Description

The first wattle and daub cottage was located on lot 61. The second wattle and daub cottage was a four roomed cottage with a verandah along the front, facing the railway line. The house was gradually demolished as the cement brick house was built.

History

David Blair Reid came from NSW via the goldfields to work as a boiler maker in the Midland railway workshops. In 1904, he married Lilly Tucker, and together with Mr & Mrs Tucker, and Lilly's brother Fred, they all set off for the south west. Acting on advice from George Scott, they selected land at Elgin and built a dwelling of split shingle and slab construction, and in 1906, built a small bridge near the Elgin siding, and called the property The Bridge'. The Reids cleared 20 acres and planted fruit trees. Meanwhile, William and Rachel Tucker, (parents in law) selected land in the Stirling Estate, built a limestone house and established an orchard. The Reids boarded teachers for the Elgin School, and in the 1920s established a tennis court, at their home, which was a popular venue for tennis parties and social events, it was the only couch grass court in the area. The cement brick house was where the post office and telephone exchange were located after it moved from Jilley's. It was also the venue for local dances before the hall was built in 1931. In 1933, on lot 61, the site of the original homestead, Jim Reid built a new home called Thirimere'.
