Statement of Significance

The single storey brick, timber and tile residence, in the Federation/InterWar Queen Anne Bungalow style, with a high degree of authenticity, which has cultural significance because: - it is a place of considerable historical significance because of its associations with Arthur Bunning, Charles Bateman and the McNeil holding; - it is a spacious and handsomely proportioned place, evocative of the lifestyle of its era, for cultured and successful merchants; - it is a notable and rare example of its style and period which retains a high level of integrity; - it forms part of a cultural grouping of cultural heritage places.

Physical Description

The residence is an attractive and intact example of the post World War I Queen Anne Bungalow. It is handsomely proportioned. Its several gable wings are framed and given coherence by an elegantly framed and decorated timber verandah.

History

This place was subdivided from part of the McNeil holding. The residence was built in 1925 for Arthur Bunning, of Bunnings timber merchants, the residence was purchased c.1930 by Charles Bateman, a successful merchant who occupied the house with his wife Brenda until 1950, after which they built another at 30 The Esplanade. Considerable historical significance.

Integrity/Authenticity

The residence is a notable architectural work of its period. It retains a high level of integrity.
