Statement of Significance

The Co-op is a significant institution within the town of Quairading. It represents community co-operation for the benefit of all. This site is very significant as a physical representation of that spirit. The Co-op demonstrates associations with pioneers of the district, and leading citizens throughout Quairading's history. The activities on the site prior to the existing building are important in the establishment of the town of Quairading, the initial civic activities, the European shop keeper, and the co-operative store.

Physical Description

Extensively refurbished. Street frontage comprises large plate glass windows

History

The three lots that now comprise the Co-op were the sites of the Co-op (Lot 17), the first Roads Board office (Lot 16) and Mavros store (Lot 18). Mavros, a Greek national had his first store built by Herbert Parker in 1916, on lot 18 Heal St. He built a new store on the site in 1925, across his entire street frontage. It was demolished in 1978. The Co-op was formed at a meeting in 1916, 21 shareholders elected a chair and provisional Directors of the "Quairading and Districts Co-operative Ltd". The business of only selling goods in bulk lots, was conducted on the south side of the railway, and later in the main street. In 1918 the Chairman Mr Solomon procured a lease on crown land in Heal Street, on a portion of the site of the existing building. In 1919 Herbert Parker's tender was accepted, and the new Co-op was constructed and opened in 1919. The existing building shows evidence of a number of changes over the years and expansion to include the two sites either side of the original co-op building.
