Salvation Army Headquarters (fmr) and Salvation Army Congress Hall (fmr) are conspicuous Perth landmarks and are fine examples of the Federation Free style and the Inter-War Georgian style respectively. The place is an important collection of civic and institutional historic buildings in the Murray Street. Salvation Army Headquarters (fmr) is an important part of a precinct of late nineteenth century buildings in Pier Street between Hay and Murray Streets. The place was constructed by and for the Salvation Army in Western Australia, which has provided important religious and welfare services to the community of Western Australia since 1891.
69 Murray Street - Two storey building, symmetrical elevation with bands of unpainted bricks and render. Arched double hung sash windows, formal central entrance flanked by columns. Parapet with decorative motif.48-58 Pier Street - Three storey building distinguished by tower with faceted oriel windows and battlement parapet. Facade embellished with tourelles, quioning and extensive stucco decoration.
Salvation Army Congress Hall (fmr) at 69 Murray Street was designed by Staff Captain Percival Dale of the Salvation Army's main office in Melbourne and constructed in 1929/1930. It was built onto the front of the barracks building which was previously constructed at the rear of the property. The Salvation Army was established in WA in 1891. Larger premises were needed, and the Salvation Army bought land on Pier Street in 1898. In 1901 they bought the lot next to the Pier Street property in Murray Street. Prior to the construction of the building the Salvation Army used the house already on the property which was demolished for the Congress Hall. The hall was opened in March 1930. The building was used for administrative and community services. In 1991 the Salvation Army moved to Northbridge and the buildings were sold. The building was converted to residential use by architect Brian Klopper in 1993. Salvation Army Headquarters (fmr) building at 48 Pier Street was constructed in 1899 by the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army bought four shops adjacent to the headquarters building in 1918. The rear of the headquarters was converted to residential apartments and connected to the building on Murray Street in 1997. This building is also known as the Perth Fortress building which was opened in 1911. The People’s Palace was located in the upper floors of the shops and was designed to provide cheap accommodation for travellers. The Salvation Army also operated a soup kitchen from the building during the 1910s. The shopfronts were used as office space for the Salvation Army. During the 1930s some of the shops were leased to other tenants.
Low level of integrity. High level of authenticity.
