Statement of Significance

This place has a high level of social and historic significance for its association with world events and its commemoration of World War veterans.

Physical Description

Reminiscent of the State War Memorial in Kings Park and others in Western Australia, this cenotaph of rough dressed stone blocks in the form of an obelisk with smooth stone capping and base. The front face has a large stone cross in low relief surmounted by a bronze sword. Below this is the "rising sun" symbol of the AIF also in bronze and a "Lest We Forget" inscription of remembrance. The obelisk has a stepped base and is set in a brick paved court of herring bone pattern with an inset cross. The word "REMEMBRANCE" is inscribed in large letters on a wooden log behind the obelisk. NB: *Cenotaph - memorial monument to persons buried elsewhere. Obelisk - large monolith (granite) square on plan tapering to an electrum-capped pyramid at the summit (the sacred part). It has a height of nine or ten times the diameter of the base.

History

The Bedford War Memorial was a project of the Bedford/Morley Returned Servicemen's League. It was constructed in 1958-9 following an active fundraising campaign. The original site chosen was on the opposite side of Salisbury Street which was outside the Bayswater Shire, but this changed to the east side to avoid proximity to the hotel.
