Statement of Significance

123 Throssell Street, Collie, a single storey brick and tile commercial building constructed in about 1912 in the Federation Bungalow style of architecture has cultural heritage significance as part of the early commercial centre of Collie and for the contribution it makes to the streetscape of Collie.

Physical Description

123 Throssell Street is a former bank built c1912 in the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. It is brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof with terracotta finials and timber louvred gables to the front and back. The Throssell Street frontage has been modified for a shop with a flat roofed iron roof over the entrance that protrudes from the original roofline. There are canvas bull nose awnings over the windows either side of a central glazed door. Plaster pilasters and rendered brickwork up to window sill height emphasise the entry. Around the corner the Mungalup Rd elevation is rendered brick. The steel shop signage wraps around at roof level, but the orignal tiled roofline is visible behind. There is a tall brick chimney with concrete corbelling and two chimney pots. To the rear of the buliding there is a skillion Colorbond roof and a rear space enclosed with a garage roller door, louvres and brick.

History

Street names are not listed in the Post Office Directories for Collie until 1934. At this time, the occupant of 73 Throssell Street is listed as the Bank of NSW, with HE Forwood as manager. The Post Office Directories list the Bank of NSW from 1926, with Forwood as manager. Prior to that Mr Forwood is listed as the manager of the WA Bank. Forwood is listed as the manager of the Bank of NSW until 1937. From 1938 until 1941, HH Conroy is the manager, followed by HW Harrold in 1942. By 1944 (there are no Post Office Directories available for 1943), and until 1949 when the records cease, the occupant is listed as the Commercial Bank with DR Davey as manager. In 2015, the site no longer operates as a bank and is occupied by ‘Spry’s on Throssell’. Signage indicates that from 2014 it was occupied by ‘Collie Farm Factory Direct’ and in 1995 by Aussie Fried Chicken.
