The place represents ways of life no longer practiced. It also demonstrates the unique country co-operation. The place contributes to the streetscape of the main street and the townscape character of Yealering.
Originally a timber framed and horizontal iron clad structure with a gable iron roof.
One of the early buildings in town, it is still evident where the Bank of Australasia and the Yealering Post Office (from 1919) were located, on the north end of the building. The generator was located at the rear of the co-op, suppling power to the hotel and businesses in the immediate vicinity until SEC was connected in 1968. In 1916 it was suggested by the Westralian Farmers Co-op that an agent in Yealering handle the wheat crop. John Baxter formed a company with 5 provisional directors and the Co-op was instigated. The community decision was not to merge with the existing Wickepin Co-op, but to form a separate Yealering Co-op. In 1920 the Co-op purchased Hessen's store and goods, closing the store, and employing the store Manager Arthur Kelly, as the company Secretary. Kelly later became the Co-op manager. The Yealering Co-operative provided benefits for all the community, by having the power to bulk buy. The Co-op altered and expanded over the years. In 1962 the Yealering Co-op power station opened, it was located. When the bakery in Dalton Street closed in 1948, the Post Office located at that situation, and continued to operate from there until bout 1985 when it relocated to the Co-op building. In 1986 a "Shop local" campaign was launched by the Co-op, to encourage Yealering and Wickepin people to support their local Co-ops as they were experiencing cash flow problems. In an efforrt to rationalise, the Co-op reduced stock levels, floor space and drapery stock. In May 1987 the Co-op went into liquidation, at a special meeting in the Yealering Hall. However that year the Wickepin community formed a local consortium called "Wogolin Pty Ltd" leased out the Co-op. In Yealering a local Board of Management headed by C Coxon and L&W Hillier purchased the Co-op from the liquidators. The Co-op as the central goods provider in the district is also the place when much social interaction takes place, as well as the communication of the post office and the commercial activities of the bank.
