Historically one of the most important of the early Murchison stations, leases in the Murgoo area were taken up by the Wittenooms as an extension of Yuin in the 1870s and the first building on the present site erected in 1879. The collection of buildings put up over the years illustrates the typical haphazard growth to meet the needs of a station homestead and the original two room stone cottage with its local pine timber and its thatch still visible under the iron roof is an interesting relic of early construction.
The group of 8 buildings which constitute the main dwellings and the collection of outbuildings at some distance were erected at various times from 1879 when Mr Wittenoom sent the carpenter from Yuin to put up a store and a two room cottage. Stone was quarried from a site about 2 kms away, timber brought from a good stand of native pines below Yuin and grass rushes for thatch cut from an area 16kms south of Yuin. This thatch can still be seen beneath the iron roof. The original cottage contains the main living area and a small kitchen has been added. Other buildings in the complex are the office, guest house, bush shed, two other old cottages used as quarteres, meat house, engine room and pump house and a newer house with verandahs. The outbuildings include an old stone shed, hidden by corrugated iron additions, an old magazine, also of corrugated iron, stables, cart shed, blacksmith shop, fodder shed and machinery shed. Further away are two buildings used as quarters. The shearing shed is some distance south of the homestead and was not inspectec.
