Statement of Significance

This single storey timber framed and tile roofed Pavilion, in the Federation Queen Anne style, has cultural significance because: the Park and its Pavilion have been established for a century and, for most of the history of Peppermint Grove, have been a social and recreational focus for the suburb; the Park and Pavilion have considerable historical and social significance; the Pavilion is a comparatively rare examples of public pavilion of this period; the park has associations with Keane and Sir J J Talbot Hobbs. The Tennis Pavilion is an accomplished design which skillfully relates style, scale and detail. A valuable and continuing site of Peppermint Grove social life. Considerable social significance. The Tennis Pavilion is within the Manners Hill Park Reserve. Manners Hill Park neighbour Keane's Point (Freshwater Bay Yacht Club). The Tennis Pavilion is one of the few remaining public pavilions in this style.

Physical Description

A hipped pavilion with a part skillion, part crippled verandah to three facades, with a central decorative gable with flagpole. Tennis Pavilion set within a leased area of a Public Reserve

History

Peppermint Grove Tennis Club Pavilion was built on land that was originally Edward Keane's cow paddock. In 1899 the land was purchased by the Crown and created into a public park. The reserve and pavilion were created as places of public enjoyment, and continue in that role. Considerable historical significance.

Integrity/Authenticity

Modifications: Tiled roofed gazebo donated from private residences and recently relocated at the southern end of the tennis courts.
