The place is an example of a residence representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
Single storey rendered and terracotta tile hipped roof house which is not fully intact. The roof extends over the verandah which is supported by rendered piers. The timber double hung sash windows are extant.
Ellen Street was named for Ellen Mangles of Woodbridge, Surrey, England, wife of Sir James Stirling, the Governor. In 1894 lot 394 parts 1 and 8 were vacant and owned by Edward GT Back who was the sub inspector of police in Fremantle. In 1895 a cottage was erected on the lot and it was occupied by Edward William Thomas Back (son of Edward GT Back), a customs officer, and his wife Mary Amelia Sweetman. It was in the family until 1937 when it was bought by Joyce Bros Ltd., bedding and furniture manufacturers. In 1955 it came under the ownership of Adams Electric Pty Ltd.
