Statement of Significance

The place represents a continuing function as a retail shop and demonstrates changing ways of life. The place makes a significant contribution to the main street streetscape of Narembeen. The architecture is representative of a period of Narembeen's development.

Physical Description

The original shop front is a classical piece of architecture with a rendered finish. It is symmetrical about a central recessed entry with truncated shop fronts angled to the entry from horizontally banded pilasters each side. The parapet has a central pediment and decorative elements atop the pilasters. The remainder of the construction is brick and corrugated iron. Wrought iron balustrading with a geometric pattern delineates the street boundary at the frontage. On the east side street frontage a brick and iron lean-to has been added, with sliding aluminium framed door onto the street.

History

J Parrott's shop ? This place was known as the Economic Stores. From the late 1940s Lin Rodgers was associated with Westralian Farmers Co-op, and when he sold out his shop (not this one) in the early 1950s the new Co-op administration took over the running of the Economic Store as well as the Co-op. Later they sold the Economic Stores and concentrated on the Co-op site. In 1949, when the Warners were running this shop, Catholic Mass for the Narembeen parish was held on the back verandah.
