The telegraph line has historic significance for the development of the Shark Bay area and demonstrates the communications system from the late 19th until the middle of the 20th century. The telegraph line provided a vital communications link for the district.
Little remains of the old telegraph line to Hamelin Pool. The iron poles have timber cross pieces which support white ceramic insulators.
The coastal telegraph line from Northampton to Roebourne was approved in 1881 and constructed in the early 1880s with repeater stations located approximately every 500 kilometres along the line. On 21 April, 1884 the Hamelin Pool Telegraph Station commenced operations at the southern end of Hamelin Pool. (Place No. 17) The service through to Shark Bay was established in 1892-93. In 1952 the old coastal telegraph line was replaced with a new communication channel via Mullewa and Gascoyne Junction to Carnarvon, by-passing Hamelin Pool. See the entry for Hamelin Pool Telegraph Station for further background information.
