business, and continued until 1994. Statement of significance: The place demonstrates a considerable associations with the development of agricultural and mechanical technology, and with an identity of the region. It has functioned continuously since its establishment. The architecture is significant in demonstrating construction during the depression years, and example of vernacular rural, and the association with mechanised transport. It is a rare example of the period which has been retained with the degree of integrity and authenticity that this place demonstrates. It is an important element in the townscape character of Kulin, and a vital element in the streetscape.
The timber framed building is clad with horizontal sheets of corrugated iron. The roof is also clad with corrugated iron and there are skylights in the roof. The roof is pitched at a relatively steep pitch and the verandah is a break pitch. The building is truncated across the street corner, and the roof line and verandah follows the truncation. The verandah is supported by square timber posts. Original window signwriting is still evident on the shop front windows around the truncated section which has the double entry door central.
During the mid 1920s WM Butler & Co of Wickepin established an agency business in Kulin (see Ref No. 61). In the late 1920s WH (Bill) Butler (WM's son) established in Kulin and took over the agency, developing it further with the construction of the garage on this site. The agencies continued. Cyril Churchwood was the first mechanic employed, followed by many others including Stan Walker from 1957 to 1965. In 1965 SH & RA Walker took over the business, and continued until 1994.
