Statement of Significance

St Mildred's was a valuable addition to the Anglican community at Tenterden. It was consecrated in May 1927. Prior to that time monthly services were held at Tenterden. first in the school and then in the Tenterden Agricultural Institute. After 1910. when Rev H G Barnacle was appointed to conduct the monthly service, efforts were made to start a building fund. The First World War intervened, so all funding went to support the Red Cross and the war effort. In the 1920s, after a succession of clergymen, a building committee was appointed, consisting of the Rector. Edward Wornum. L S Perkins and W Tufnell. A suitable block of land was obtained and a quarry was opened up. Stone was quarried and carted to the site by voluntary labour. In 1926 plans were drawn up by Mr F Coote and the tender was awarded to Mr AE Rodgers The foundation stone was laid by H J Townsend in December 1916. The inscription read; TO THE GLORY OF GOD and in memory of those men who fell in the Great War 1914-18 This stone was placed here by H J Townsend J P Dec 22nd 1926 St Mildred's Church was named after St Mildred's Church. Kent. England. A piece of stone from the mother church was sent out and built into the wall of the new church and a Bible was presented by Dr Rory McLaren, a Church Warden of the Kent church. Years later, in 1959, Dr McLaren visited Tenterden and St Mildred's, renewing the connection between the two churches. The clergymen in charge of St Mildred's (and St Oswald's in Cranbrook) lived at Mt Barker until 1955. In that year a rectory was built at Cranbrook.

Physical Description

Built in 1926-27. St Mildred's Church is situated in a bush setting surrounded by many mature native trees. It is set back from the road behind a post and rail fence. St Mildred's is a wooden framed fibreboard church with a stone base , and a gabled corrugated iron roof with a cross at the apex of the roof. A tower with a cross on top is located centrally in the roof. The church grounds have always been well tended by the local people who planted shrubs and trees, and encouraged the growth of natural wild flowers.
