The site demonstrates associations with the pastoralists era of development in the region, and the pastoral pioneers. It demonstrates the importance and significance of a water supply.
Before settlers came to the area, the government contracted the construction of the Mt Madden Dam. Mr Gibson from Ravensthorpe excavated the dam which supplied water for the drovers and the sheep traversing the area looking for pastures. The dam broke its banks repeatedly. Each year the shepherds from Albany visited the dam, and each year they fixed the dam. The remains of the dam are on the south west side of the rock dam. In 1929, Hugh Roberts and Mr Bebington dug a well that produced 3000 gallons a day. However it caved in frequently due to pipe clay walls, and was eventually filled in 1950. The third water supply was a bore at Mt Madden. It was sited near the well in 1940, but was inadequate due to pump breakdowns. Both the well & the bore are south of the existing supply. Local farmers agitated lor full use of the Mt Madden catchment area, and in 1964 the construction Division of the PWD excavated a 3 million gallon capacity dam. A rock wall was built on the contour around the rock catchment. The Mt Madden Dam was one of the last agricultural dams built by the government in WA. The water supply is invaluable in the area.
