The Nunagin Spring has historic, social and representative cultural heritage significance. Aboriginal people of the district may have used the spring, as it was a permanent water supply that became important to early farming settlers. It represents a class of natural water sources that were valuable in a dry region such as the Dumbleyung-Lake Grace region. The knowledge of such a water supply was an important part of early environmental awareness that was vital to the survival of the early settlers.
Some of the notable features of this place include: • Formerly a pool of water • A stand of fig trees is located close to the spring • Previously there were fruit trees in the vicinity of the spring
The Nunagin Spring was famous for its regular supply of water. The spring became a central meeting point in the district as it was one of the few permanent water supplies. The spring was used to supply water for the Dumbleyung townsite, for neighbouring farms and for market gardens and stock. The Wann family grew fruit and vegetables here for their shop in town. Water was also carted from there for construction of the Katanning road. In 1968 the Meckering earthquake changed the flow of the water and it has never been the same since. The spring now contains very little water. A previous landowner cleared much of the orchard and most of the fig trees around the spring to help reduce the amount of water being lost. However, this has made very little difference to its 'dryness'. The surrounding property, Nunagin Springs, was originally owned by George Kersley. Jack Mclntyre then farmed it for many years. It was eventually purchased by his son, Vern Mclntyre about 1960. The Bartrams purchased the farm in 1986.
