Statement of Significance

The memorial is important as it marks the link with Broome of the first Englishman to visit Australia shores. It has been on the Trust's recorded list since 1973.

History

Assessment June 1983 The Dampier Memorial was built in 1938 and was designed by Marshall Clifton. It is built in the form of a sea-chest in granite with Dampier's name and coat of arms on it. The original exposition notes that is was funded by the Commonwealth and the WA Historical Society and that a dedicatory oration for its unveiling was written by John Masefield. William Dampier was the first Englishman to sight Australia. He visited the north-west coast in 1688 in "Cygnet" and in 1699 in "Roebuck", the bay on which Broome stands being on if his landing places on the second voyage.
