The place is significant as a source of sustaining settlement in the area.
Originally, six and a half acres natural rock catchment area (storage for 600,000 gallons) and concrete storage tank.
The local story is that the sandalwood cutters camped at the rock, and shot the first tew rabbits seen in the district, calling the rock Bunny Rock which over time became Bonnie Rock. In January 1930, plans marked 'very urgently required in the new settlement' were submitted to PWD for a water reservoir at Bonnie Rock reserve, to ease the strain on Donkey Soak. The existing well at Bonnie Rock was not adequate with the proposed eastward extension of the railway from Kulja to Bonnie Rock. Originally the tank was for agricultural purposes only. The reservoir was completed in January 1931, in time for the railway which reached Bonnie Rock in April that year. A weekly train service ran to Bonnie Rock, and it was estimated that of the 600,000 gallons stored in the reservoir, annually, railways needed 350,000 gallons and the settlers the remainder.
