Statement of Significance

The place is of historic significance as an example of a commercial building in the Old Port City of Fremantle dating from the gold boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.The place is a fine, substantially intact, example of a Federation Warehouse style building that makes a significant contribution to the streetscape. The place is a significant landmark in the Old Port City of Fremantle.

Physical Description

Three story face brick building, with a zero setback from the pavement. There is an adjoining painted brick single story building on the south side. There is a pediment and 'D & J. Fowler. Ltd' is featured in the render below. There are nine large windows that are multi paned and pivot opening flanked by engaged pilasters that extend the height of the building.

History

Bag Store associated with D & J Fowler Ltd. In 1985 it was occupied by Praxis, a performance centre for artists. In 1996 occupied by Deckchair Theatre. Currently (2002), residential use.
