Physical Description

Single storey timber framed and weatherboard with ashlar effect clad walls and a corrugated iron hipped and gabled roof asymmetrical house. The roof has a rendered chimney with corbelling and the verandah on the east of the façade is supported by timber chamfered posts.

History

Fremantle Rate Book records show that there was a cottage on lot 3 of 987 in 1902/3. The owner was E. C. Bartlett. The occupant was Nathaniel Bartlett, a Bootmaker. However, post office directories do not record Bartlett’s name and the earliest trace of an occupant at No. 28 is James M. Gwyther in 1905. The house was allocated No. 43 in 1905, and became number 28 when the whole street was renumbered in 1937. A 1913 plan (PWD 13017) and the 1914 Sewerage Plan (No 2033) show an asymmetrical plan, with a gabled projecting room on the west side, and a half-length front verandah and central steps. There is a rear verandah with rooms at each end, and a projecting room on the west side at the back of the house. There are various galvanised iron outbuildings in the rear of the yard. A black and white photo from 1990 and notes are on file at the FLHC. Aerial photos show that the house was reroofed c1990 and extended to the rear between 2010 and 2015, with a new rear outbuilding built along the rear boundary.
