Statement of Significance

Significant as the site of the first public building in Wannamal, and the social and community focus of the Wannamal settlers for the generations spanning from 1912 to 1983.

Physical Description

The hall was a timber framed structure with weatherboard (??) corrugated iron wall and roof cladding. It had a gable roof, and measured 40 x 25 feet with 12 ft high ceilings.

History

From 1904, the Wannamal settlers were in need of a community hall. In 1906, reserve 9534 was gazetted in Wannamal for the Agricultural Hall. At a community meeting in July, the committee failed to endorse the proposed (gazetted) hall site, and a sub committee chose a new site. They selected Lot 1 in Wannamal townsite, and wrote to the Undersecretary of Lands. Tenders were called in March 1912, and all that were received were too expensive, and three local men began construction in August. On 27 September, H. B. Lefroy opened the Wannamal Hall and a grand ball was held to celebrate the event, with a special train from Perth transporting guests and dignitaries. The hall was the social and community venue for the settlers of Wannamal from that time, with community and family celebrations, religious services and celebrations taking place, and community meetings. By the 1980s, it was beyond economic viability to repair, and a new community hall was constructed, and the original hall demolished.
