The Five Stamp Battery is said to have been used in Golden Valley near the site of the original gold find in Yilgarn in 1888. It was previously set up near the tunnel that can still be seen today. It is not known when the battery was moved to its present site, for ownership has changed many times. The small cottage next to the battery was built by Wally Booker, a grano worker. The granite slabs were brought in slowly and put in place by Booker who also ran the batteiy. He brought his ore in from Eenuin for processing. According to his wishes, Wally Booker's ashes are scattered amongst the tailings near the cottage at the battery site. The battery was refurbished in the 1960s but has since fallen into disrepair. It is known as Colreavy Batteiy because of its proximity to the Mt Colreavy mine, named after one of the original successful gold prospectors who located gold in 1888.
The Colreavy Batteiy is situated 1.5km east of the first site where gold was found in the Yilgarn. The Battery has a tractor alongside which was the source of power for the crusher. Situated close by is a small one-roomed cottage built of smooth-faced granite rock. It had a wooden plank skillion roof and rough stone chimney. Today it is very dilapidated but reflects an interesting period of history for the district.
