Although low key, Three Shops is a central part of the streetscape of Tower Street and makes an important contribution to the visual character of this important streetscape with its continuous verandah cover and pedimented parapets. The site is representative of retailing at the turn-of-the-century and is significant for its form and continuity of use.
Three shops is a row of three, single-storey brick building shops built to the building line of Tower Street. Verandah roofs provide a continuous cover across the three shops, over the footpath. The shop on the southern end has firewalls in brickwork laid in colonial bond and a rendered brick parapet. The front elevation features painted 'butcher' tiles laid in a decorative pattern. The shopfront is constructed of timber framed windows with large glazed panes with security grilles over. The elevation is protected by a bullnosed verandah supported on stop-chamfered timber posts. The interior has pressed metal ceilings that have been patched with fibro-cement lining. The walls of the interior are painted and the timber floors are now covered with linoleum. The shopfront on the central building retains some original joinery, and includes new aluminium sliding doors, new glazed window panes and window grilles. The verandah roofs are lined with ripple iron at the spandrels. The interior now has a false ceiling, the timber floors are covered with carpet, and lightweight, removable partitions have been installed. The shopfront on the end building has also undergone alterations and now has three large window panes. The bullnosed verandah has been replaced with a lean-to and, roof gutters, support posts and linings have been replaced. The layout of the interior of the shop has been altered to a degree that has diminished the integrity of the place.
