The site is significant as a townsite in the Boyanup area, planned before the town of Boyanup.
Gwindinup townsite is in the vicinity of the siding, which is on the Boyanup Donnybrook line, the first siding south of Boyanup. The area of Gwindinup was settled before Boyanup. The Bunbury-Boyanup railway was completed in 1887, but not used until 1891. The Boyanup line was connected to the main southwest line from Perth on 22 August 1893, and as Donnybrook was emerging as the centre of a rapidly expanding orchard industry, the line was extended and opened to traffic on 16 November 1892.
