The site has associations with social, cultural and educational activities, and generations of people in Boyanup since 1917. The place has significant associations with Hugh Kilpatrick and continues to be an important community facility in Boyanup.
Brick and metaldeck clad structure.
Site of original hall: The first Boyanup Hall was known as the Agricultural Hall. As early as 1892, the town population was 450, which was matched by the surrounding population, and land was set aside for Anglican and Congregational Churches and a hall site and plans prepared. A small brick building was constructed on this site in 1897. In 1917, Alfred Peak built a timber hall next to the original hall which subsequently became the Lesser Hall. Later a stage and front rooms were added to facilitate the numerous functions at the hall. It was the centre of the social and community activity in Boyanup, with regular dances, silent movies, community and family celebrations, meetings and other events taking place. During the 1950s and 1960s the Repertory Club was active, and badminton was played regularly between the weddings and celebrations which continued to take place. In 1977, at a public meeting it was decided a new facility was needed, and the hall and original school were demolished to make way for the new recreational facility. Site of original Boyanup School; In 1896, a School opened in Boyanup town (lots 29, 30, 31), after having been at Runnymeade since 1890. In 1922, the school was situated adjacent to the Boyanup Agricultural Hall and operated till 1930 with up to 100 students. The headmasters house was close by and is still there (see Ref No. 89) but the school house was demolished to make way for new community centre. The Hugh Kilpatrick Memorial Centre was the result of six years work by the Boyanup community. It cost $170,000 which was jointly funded by the Shire of Capel, the Department of Youth Sport and Recreation, the late Hugh (Digger) Kilpatrick, and the people of Boyanup and Elgin. Hugh Kilpatrick generously gifted $50,000 shortly before his death in 1981, for 'a decent hall to be built in Boyanup'. The centre was officially opened on 30 April 1983.
