Site of St Joseph's Convent (demolished c1968) is significant as a site because it was the location from 1863 of Saint Joseph's Convent and College, which stood south of and adjacent to Saint Patrick's Church in Adelaide Street. (The church is now known as the Basilica of St Patrick.)
DEMOLISHED
Adelaide St is one of the earliest streets of Fremantle, appearing in the 1833 survey. It is named for Queen Adelaide, consort of William IV. This place was formerly the site of Saint Joseph's Convent and College, which stood south of and adjacent to Saint Patrick's Church in Adelaide Street. (The church is now known as the Basilica of St Patrick.) from 1863 to 1968. Later the convent buildings were removed and the place became the site of Coles New World Supermarket and more recently Ross's Salvage Store. The latter was demolished in 2006. An archaeological study and documentary evidence was undertaken prior to commencement of the construction of the Woolworths development which was completed 2008. The convent appears originally to have been a two-storey building; an additional storey was added when the building was later extended.
A report of an archaeological survey of the former St. Joseph's Convent site : Adelaide Street Fremantle is located in the City's Local History Collection. This report describes and interprets the material remains found during archaeological surveys and test pitting at the former St. Joseph's Convent site fronting Adelaide Street, Fremantle. It provides recommendations for this material's display as part of the site's overall heritage interpretation as advised in the planning condition relating to a development proposal.
