Statement of Significance

The building of the hospital in 1882 reflected the importance of Williams in this area. Undoubtedly it was the only hospital between Perth /York - to Bunbury/Albany. It was situated at Williams as this was the centre of the Magisterial District which was often a joint role of a medical practitioner.

Physical Description

Situated on the left hand side of the Narrogin Road, on the left bank of the Williams River, between the original police station and the school. The first hospital to be build at Williams was made of bricks and completed towards the end of 1882. Like other buildings in this area, flooding took its toll.

History

necessary the doctor made his call at the hospital and there attended to all medical requirements of the patient. All other duties were the responsibility to the orderly. For a number of years this position was filled by an ex ticket-of-leave man by the name of William McMullen who, after a jollification at the local hotel on the occasion of New Year's eve celebration in 1888, was murdered by an expired ticket-of-leave man named William Allison. (1) Remained as a hospital until about 1904.
