The 40 Mile Water Shed has significance for its connection to the history of public water supplies in the Shark Bay region. The place demonstrates the simple and effective method of providing an emergency water supply in an isolated area.
Situated on the old Denham - Overlander road and about half way between the two settlements, this open shed has a corrugated iron skillion roof and is supported on metal posts. The roof collection area is approximately 5 x 8 metres. Water was collected in a large water tank (approximately 50 kilolitres capacity) which is placed half under the roof. The gutter is missing and the tank has graffiti.
The shed and tank were erected by the Shire of Shark Bay to provide emergency water supplies to travellers between Denham and the Overlander Roadhouse. The shed has not been used for this purpose since the road was realigned. (Source: Local knowledge.)
