Physical Description

The place comprises a mature avenue of sugar gum trees on both sides of Bay Road, which is on the boundary of the City of Nedlands and Town of Claremont.

History

‘The Sugar Gum trees planted along both sides of Bay Road are said to have been planted between 1902 and 1905. Another theory is that they were planted as part of a development along the road which did not get beyond planning stage. However, the mature trees are now a major part of the streetscape along Bay Road and in 1987 were added to the National estate Register of the Australian Heritage Commission. This heritage recognition has not been without controversy. In the 1960s some local residents asked for the trees to be removed or severely lopped owing to the possible dangers from falling branches. Fuel for their argument was provided when, in November 1965, one of the trees on the Claremont side fell down. However, at the time the WA Tree society was quoted as saying the trees were ‘the finest avenue of Sugar Gums in the State’. Though carefully lopped the trees were saved from removal.’
