This site is representative of the development of the Maylands townsite. The place make a significant contribution to the streetscape and is important for its social and cultural associations.
The hotel is a two-storey, Federation Classical Freestyle design that addresses the corner in typical hotel fashion. Apart from the verandahs, the hotel remains a relatively intact example of its kind and is important in terms of terminating the streetscape of Eighth Avenue. It features a two-storey load bearing brick with stucco banding. It has a shop front on the corner and double hung sashes elsewhere. Tthe original verandah has been removed. It has a cellar and the roof is iron. There is a stained glass window off the half landing of the stair.
The Central Building has historic and aesthetic values and is an important part of the Eighth Avenue streetscape. The hotel was built in 1903 for the Swan Brewery and sold to the Barber for 1500 pound. It continued to be used as a hotel until the 1940s, when it became a boarding house. It features tiled fireplaces, bevelled stained glass windows and a grand staircase.
