The place has historic value for its association with the Inter War period when prominent Perth citizens established weekenders in Darlington creating a specific character to the community.
From the limited physical evidence this place is of timber frame construction with weatherboard cladding. It has a gabled roof with small adjoining gables clad with corrugated metal sheeting.
First owned by Hastings Carew Reid who built the house as a weekender. He was the Chief Hansard Reporter in WA and was awarded the OBE in 1952. In 1919, widow Bertha Ednie Brown (her husband was John Ednie Brown Conservator of Forests) purchased the house and used it as a weekender. Her son Colin Ednie Brown then became the owner when she died in 1927. He was the Architect who designed Cairngorm and was a prominent practitioner in Western Australia. The house was transferred to surgeon Sydney Lawrence Harke (1876-1950) whose family lived there in the 1930s and gave the house its name. Aerial photographs from the mid-20th century indicate that there have been additions adjacent to the original building, but the form and extent of the original residence can still be determined.
