Statement of Significance

The school has historic, social and aesthetic value, being associated with the Group Settlement scheme of the 1920's which led to the development of the Hopeland district. It has been well maintained and set amongst a modest but pleasing garden.

Physical Description

An asbestos and weatherboard bungalow style school building with hipped broken back roof forming front and back veranda. Southern of of the veranda is enclosed with asbestos sheeting. Long double-hung six paned sash windows with protective sunshades protruding

History

In 1924, a school and quarters were erected at Hopeland. In 1927, the original school room was removed to another location. The teacher's quarters were removed and re-erected at the Serpentine School in 1928. From 1927, Hopeland School classes were held in a house on the corner of Penrak and Hopelands Roads until 1933, when a new school and quarters were erected. Hopeland School closed in 1954, with students going to the new Serpentine Primary School. The 1933 school building is now used as a community hall.
