The place is a good example of a stone residence in the Victorian Georgian style, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
Single storey stone house with brick quoining to corners and window and door openings. It has a zincalume hipped roof and two chimneys with corbelling extant.
Hampton Road was originally called Prison Road. It derives its name from John Stephen Hampton (1810-1869), the Governor of WA from 1862-68. He was previously Comptroller of Convicts in Tasmania. His son, G. E. Hampton, was Acting Comptroller-General of the Fremantle Convict Establishment. In 1897 a house was erected on the lot. It was owned and occupied by William Sherman.
