Statement of Significance

The place has aesthetic value for its use of decorative structural elements that are common features of the exuberance of goldrush architecture.

Physical Description

The building is constructed to the building line of the north-east intersection of Tower and Trump streets. The building has a hipped roof with vented gablets. A lean-to verandah roof extends across the front facade which is broken by two, small gable roofs - one either side of the elevation, this gabled verandah roof is supported on paired, square, timber posts. The roof features a corbelled brick chimney, decorative gable finials and decorative ridge motifs. The verandah roof has match boarding to the spandrels and twin brackets appear to support the overhang of the main roof. Windows aJre double-hung sashes and a casement window, to the Trump Street elevation, is divided into eight small panes with slim glazing bars. There are outbuildings at the rear of the properly (the date of construction is unknown). The building has been extended to the rear with, a lean-to addition and the timber picket fence on the verandah is a later addition. An air-conditioning unit, exposed wiring and an electrical metre box have been added to the front elevation and are considered to be intrusive. The building is in poor condition - all joinery requires patching and re-painting.

History

In June 1898 the National Bank advertised that a branch ofits bank would now be open for business in Leonora. It is assumed that this was the building that is known as the former National Bank. These buildings briefly served as the shire offices from October 1993 to May 1994 when the present shire office was being refurbished.
