This building has very high local significance for aesthetic (townscape) and social reasons.
Rendered stone shops with verandahs over pavements, CGI roof behind rendered parapets. Shopfront windows and doors are original and the interior is reasonably authentic. Overall, the building is a very important element of the streetscape and, along with several other examples, illustrates components of early Northampton architecture. These should guide development and appearance of new buildings or restoration of others in cases where original details are not known. It is thought that the central wall dividing the original shops occupying the southern portion of the building was removed many years ago. This shop originally was owned by Henry Carson. In December 1918 he sold it to Walter E. Stokes. Max Williams purchased the business in 1947 and ran the store with his wife Helen, sisters Dawn Stewart and Maureen Ash and sister-in-law, Cecily Williams. The building was formerly used as a saddlery, barber, billiard saloon and general store. (Northampton Historical Society) Geoff and Joy Cripps purchased the business in 2003.
