House, 4 Hope Street, is a single storey, brick and tile house designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are painted rendered brick. The roof is hipped and clad with tiles. There is a brick chimney evident. The façade is symmetrical with a central front door with fanlight flanked on either side by timber framed windows. The verandah has a separate dropped tiled roof. The house is currently (2010) under renovations.
Hope Street was named after Dr James W. Hope who was appointed as the surgeon for Fremantle Prison in 1886. In November 1897 he was the Acting Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum. Lot 1276 in 1901-02 was vacant land owned by the government. By 1908-09 there is a cottage occupied by Thomas Herbert Giles.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability). Medium degree of authenticity with some original fabric remaining. (These statements based on street survey only).
Condition assessed as fair to good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
