Statement of Significance

The site represents associations with the first pastoral activities on the land, the New Norcia Monks, the early settlers, and Canon McClemans.

History

The well was first constructed by the Monks from New Norcia to provide water for the grazing stock and the shepherds or travellers. The Mission Well became a source of water supply for the Craig family when they settled in the area. It was the mail pick up and delivery point for settlers in the area, when John le Cornu was contracting the mail run. Canon McClemans camped close by the Mission well in the 1930s after a farming venture failed. He lived at the site in a bush pole and hessian hut until about 1950. Canon McCleman's had formerly been the Rector of Christ Church in Claremont from 1907 to 1922, during which time he founded Christ Church (Grammar) School, and was instrumental in the establishment of Guildford Grammar School.
