A long time holiday resort for settlers providing excellent fishing, boating and other sports.
The name 'Gabbadah' means a mouthful of water. In 1905 a 100-acre reserve was declared for picnicking and camping and was secured by a petition of settlers. A well and three cottages were then constructed. In 1907 a new well was sunk and the Roads Board were charging Ishilling a week for use of the cottages. In 1918 ovens were built into stone fireplaces so bread could be baked and the first 'toilets' were erected. In 1919 Red Flowering Gums, Aleppo and Norfolk Pines were planted. In 1933 a part time caretaker was appointed, being Mr. Stanley King. The reserve was increased to 257 acres. In 1950 the land was subdivided for housing. Then in 1951 it was gazetted as a town and renamed Guilderton for the Dutch ship "Vergulde Draeck" which was wrecked off the coast in April of 1656.
