Statement of Significance

DEMOLISHED The original school for the Picton district was located on land donated by local millowner and early settler, William Forrest. Some of the Forrest children received early education here. The school represented the growth of the district and the need to provide an education for settlers' children.

Physical Description

DEMOLISHED Timber arch commemorates the site. It reads: ORIGINAL SITE PICTON SCHOOL 1861 - 1882 REOPENED 1891

History

In the 1850s, William Forrest lobbied for a school to be established for the children of the Picton district and donated land for a school. The school operated from this site from 1861 to 1882. It re-opened in 1891 and closed again in 1896. The first headmaster was William Frederick Jones. Other teachers include Samuel Millward, D McConnell and George Sinclair. Some of the Forrest children received their early education there. Details of the building are not known, but it is assumed that it was a timber and iron structure. The building became dangerous due to termite damage and a new school was built in 1896 on land opposite this site. The site is marked by a timber arch and plaque, erected by CSBP & Farmers Ltd on their land.
