History

While the majority of the wheatbelt in Western Australia was serviced by rail, and the introduction of bulk handling in 1932, the Varley district was not provjded with either of those facilities. In 1938 settlers were still having to deliver their bagged grain to the Newdegate Railway Station. The Varley Progress Association lobbied for subsidised transport system, and that resulted in the introduction of the first major haulage contractors in the district. The establishment of a bulk bin at Varley was the next priority. The first bins were completed for the 1940/41 harvest. The Holt Rock and Varley bins were constructed at the same time, and both attended by Tom Cox on alternate days. Later open "bulk head" bins were introduced to cope with the volumes of grain. The original bin was on the site of the existing CBH bin. After a request from the Varley Museum Committee, to use the building as a museum, CBH demolished the bin. The existing "D" class bin stores the harvest (capacity 11,600 tonnes), and the 40 tonne capacity road trains deliver it to the Port of Esperance.
